The TKB-579 (Cyrillic: ТКБ-579) was a Soviet sniper rifle designed by German Korobov in 1958 and produced by TsKIB SOO in prototype form only.

History[]

The TKB-579 was developed by German Korobov in 1958. The weapon was intended to be entered into a competition organized by the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate (GRAU) to find a rifle that could replace the Mosin-Nagant in its sniper rifle role. The rifle apparently functioned so poorly that it is speculated that GRAU simply declined to test the weapon at all. The competition was ultimately won by the Dragunov sniper rifle. The sole known prototype is currently on exhibit at the Tula State Arms Museum.[1]

Design details[]

The weapon is gas-operated with a centralized gas piston linked to two gas outlet channels on the sides of the barrel. The weapon is select-fire; it can fire both semi- and fully automatically.[1]
