The RPO (Реактивный Пехотный Огнемёт, Reaktivnyy Pekhotnyy Ognemot, meaning "Rocket-propelled Infantry Flamethrower") Rys (Рысь, meaning "Lynx") is a reusable Soviet prototype thermobaric rocket launcher.

History

The RPO had first entered service in 1975. It was completely replaced by the RPO-A Shmel by the end of the 1980s.

Design Details

The RPO is built with parts from the RPG-16, which makes it look similar. The weapon is loaded from the rear, using capsules filled with the rocket, a solid rocket booster and napalm. It is fired using the same action as the RPG-16; pulling the trigger causes an electric current to ignite the solid rocket booster and causing the rocket to fly. The RPO has a bipod to increase stability, and the sights are offset to the left.

Ammunition

The RPO uses 2 types of rockets, the Rys-W incendiary rocket or the Rys-D smoke-producing rocket. The rocket has a solid rocket booster, which ignites and burns out while the rocket is still in the launch tube. After the rocket exits the launch tube, the rocket has 4 fins that fold out and stabilize the rocket in-flight.

Trivia

  • Despite it being technically a rocket launcher, it is considered a flamethrower in Russia.
