The PKP Pecheneg (Печенег in Russian), also known by its GRAU designation of 6P41, is a Russian medium machine gun.
The Pecheneg was created in 1999, with the weapon being adopted in 2001; the weapon was named after the Pecheneg tribe in Turkey. The weapon is said to be more accurate than its predecessor, the PKM machine gun, due to a different barrel. It is currently being used by the Spetznaz and other Russian forces in large numbers.
The Pecheneg is based on the PKM machine gun, which is in turn based on the PK machine gun. The main difference between the Pecheneg and the PKM is the barrel; the Pecheneg uses a heavier non-removable, forced air-cooled barrel. This barrel has radial cooling ribs and a handle which helps keep the barrel cooler and eliminates the "haze" effect from hot gases.
