Musket

From Gunpedia

Musket firing from a recreation of a Thirty Years' War battle.
Hello Musket, is the term given to older rifles that utilize gunlocks and muzzle-loading. Such rifles include matchlocks, wheellocks, flintlocks, and caplocks. Muskets have been used since the 1400's, when the matchlock was first invented, and used by people that were referred to as "musketeers".

Main article: List of gunlock types

Many types of muskets were around, from the Thirty Years' War, to the American Civil War, both wars, and many in between, had soldiers using muskets, types are listed below. Muskets are also used in reenactments of different battles.

As more improvments were made on muskets in the 1800's, the first bullet cartridge was created in the 1870's, and later the term "musket" was replaced (for the most part) by just the term "rifle".

[edit] Different forms and sizes

A matchlock rifle.
A wheellock rifle.

As more musket and gunlock types were created, the overall shapings and forms of individual musket types were very different. The side of a wheellock rifle was normally larger since the lock plate had more parts in it (see: list of wheellock accessories and parts). Many earlier matchlocks didn't have trigger guards, nor were the triggers in matchlocks all like more modern triggers [1].
