The Johnson Auto-Carbine was an American prototype automatic rifle designed by Melvin Johnson.

History[]

The Johnson Auto-Carbine was developed by Melvin Johnson in the early 1940s. It was marketed towards the US Army but was not accepted into service. One example was privately purchased by a USMC Lieutenant, who took it into combat in the Pacific Theater, but otherwise it saw no official military use. Argentina also expressed interest in 1946 but never adopted it. Only 13 prototypes of the Johnson Auto Carbine were made.

Design[]

The Johnson Auto-Carbine was a recoil-operated automatic rifle. It was based on the earlier Johnson light machine gun, but utilized the 10-round rotary magazine of the Johnson rifle.
