The Barrett XM500 was an American anti-materiel rifle designed in 2006 and manufactured in prototype form only by Barrett Firearms Manufacturing.

History[]

The XM500 was first unveiled at the 2006 NDIA Small Arms Symposium.[1] The weapon was intended to enter production and see use by the U.S. Army after being trialed,[2] but nothing appears to have come of the weapon since. The project is now assumed to have been shelved, with no tests known to have been conducted to evaluate the design.

Design[]

The XM500 is a bullpup .50 caliber anti-materiel rifle apparently intended to replace the M82 in production. The rifle is said to be gas operated as opposed to recoil operated which may aid in the weapon's accuracy.[2] The weapon's charging handle is located near the front of the receiver. The weapon takes 10-round detachable box magazines, presumably the same magazines as used by the M82. Other details about the XM500 are not known.
