AEK-918 is a Russian select-fire submachine gun, chambered with 9x19mm Parabellum and 9x18mm PM(AEK-919K) rounds, developed by the Kovrov Mechanical Plant. AEK-918 is offered as a weapon for certain categories of personnel (crews of aircraft and combat vehicles), as well as special forces of law enforcement agencies.

Construction

Automatics of the weapon works by the blowback. To reduce the size of the weapon, was used the scheme with the shutter, oncoming on the barrel, covering the barrel from the top and sides (like in pistols). Reloading handle is on the left side of the receiver. The lower part of the receiver and the frame of the weapon are made of glass fiber reinforced polyamide, the top of the receiver is made of the stamped steel. The barrel has polygonal rifling, when disassembling is separated from the weapon. The trigger mechanism allows single and automatic fire. Shot is fired from the rear sear. Safe-fire mode selector is made in the form of a three-position button located on the left side of the receiver. Detachable box magazine, has a staggered double row magazine a double row output of rounds. Pistol grip plays the role of a magazine receiver. To increase the stability of the weapon when firing, a stock equipped with a turning butt, which retracts into the receiver, when in travel position . The weapon has a front and rear iron sights. The laser pointer and/or collimator sight can be mounted. To perform specific tasks submachine gun can be equipped with a "PMS" tactical silencer (low noise firing unit). At the end of of 2006 due to the liquidation of the the department and conversion of the whole plant, production of AEK-918 sub-machine guns has been discontinued.

Combat use

The first combat use of AEK-918 submachine gun was noted in the spring of 1995 by one of the special forces of the FSB (which has received a batch of 100 submachine guns) during the restoration of the constitutional order in Chechnya. In 2002, with AEK-918 were armed the crews of the Ka-50 "Black Shark" helicopters, that operated in the war zone in Chechnya and Dagestan. In 2003, AEK-918 submachine guns were officially adopted by the Federal Bailiff Service. As of October 2006, AEK-918's modification - AEK-919K "Kashtan" was applied by special units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, FSO, FSB and FSIN (probably, has been already replaced with more modern submachine guns).

Modifications

  • AEK-918 - base model, chambered with 9x19mm Parabellum round.
  • AEK-918G - a prototype, build by the classic scheme, chambered with 9x19mm Parabellum round. Has a weird-looking flash suppressor.
  • AEK-919K "Kashtan" - a modification, chambered with 9x18mm PM round. Probably used by different law enforcement agencies or has been already replaced with more modern submachine guns.
